Would it be incorrect to use a semi-colon here?

Accorting to a technical writing professor I once had, you are only supposed to use a semicolon when the two halves of the sentence are able to sand alone as a full sentence on its own. The second part of your sentence would be a fragment if you were to seperte it, so please do not use a semicolon.
